12:59 am - Context is everything
I just today saw a product description use a completely different context than the typical one I use, for three words I use all of the time. Those words are: "cordless", "wireless", and "blackout". Enjoy!

You probably know you probably should've jail-broken your iPhone a long time ago, because there are plenty of non Apple approved apps that are useful and valuable. But you didn't, because it was hard or risky or purported to be illegal. Well, now it's much less hard and risky, and definitely not illegal. See this article on Retrevo for more reasons to do it.

12:08 pm - Dating Lies - Statistical Analysis
I just noticed that OKCupid, a free fun site initially set up for dating but which has so much more (quizzes, blogs, chat, and a lot of fun randomness), put out another one of their site blogs recently (July 7th). These are usually about some aspect of statistical analysis on their population of about 1.5M active users, and this one is no different. This one is about the apparent lies that people tell on their profiles, how those lies are detectable, and (as usual) has some lovely graphs. You can read it here.

02:32 pm - New research on squirrels
I've enjoyed watching squirrels for a long time... well, all but the ones that razed all of the corn in my garden last year long before it had a chance to grow tall. They're pretty interesting, and here's a bit more information on them that shows why. (Click on the picture below to read....)

11:49 am - OKC IceBreakers
OK Cupid, a meeting and dating site, has a new feature called IceBreakers. This feature picks something from your profile and also from someone else's... someone who theoretically has something in common with you and matches your selection criteria.
The process is that you don't get to know anything about them but this one common element, but you can send an email anyway. What's the topic? Of course it has to be the one common element between you. The one that came up for me recently was haiku; others that I've seen are rock climbing and friends. Yes, really, "friends." Anyway, this is what I wrote to Ms. Mystery who says she likes haiku:
you enjoy haiku
they say it's special to you
like well-worn sweaters
how could anyone
esteem haiku more than i
structured thoughts run far
haiku lends itself
to endless doggerel, life
I've gotten no reply as yet, but let's just say my expectations are low.

If you haven't seen this, you should. It's a fully-integrated view of the emergency landing post bird strike of US Airways flight 1549. It may cause you a distinct sense of information overload, but you can hit pause or back up and repeat sections--none of the participants could. This view includes and integrates several radio sources, radar tracks (enhanced to show bird flock positioning) and cockpit chatter, as well as a lovely visual reconstruction.
You can find the whole page that this came from here.

07:13 pm - Another line from the Personals
Here's another line from the personals that just ached to be shared:
I am looking for the person who will find a spce for me in his hearth...
Although I've never been one to burn bridges--or girlfriends or even ex-wives--I'm sure I could find space in my hearth for this one.
04:29 pm - Only in Japan
This is apparently a real product available from Burger King Japan. It's a 7-patty burger in honor of the transcendent advent of Windows 7:
